In old days China, the term 'Nu Yishu' was interpreted as women's needle work, embroideries or sewing - proper activities for ladies in their secluded homes. Yet in contemporary time, women's occupations have extended far beyond their predecessors' domestic engagements to participate in the competitive arenas of the stock market. 'Nu Yishu' attempts to manifest modern-day women's involvement in the sophisticated number games of the financial world. The process of burning holes on the garments with an incense stick emulated the movement of sewing with a needle in the past.
In 'Contemporary Nu Yishu', indexes of different stock markets or trade codes of iconic stocks are burnt on the garment. The process of 'burnt and loss' speaks out the treacherous ups and downs of the financial world.
